Shiffrin extends

slalom streak

SEMMERING, Austria (AP) — Mikaela Shiffrin came from behind to win a World Cup night slalom in tough conditions and extend her winning streak in the discipline to six races.

The American was fourth, more than half a second off the pace in the opening run on a rapidly deteriorating course. But she posted the fastest time in the evening to beat first-run leader Camille Rast. The world champion from Switzerland finished 0.09 seconds behind.

Italian-born prodigy Lara Colturi was 0.57 back in third. Colturi competes for Albania.

Cubs sign

RH reliever

CHICAGO (AP) — Right-handed reliever Hunter Harvey agreed to a one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the agreement was pending a physical.

The addition of Harvey is the latest move in a bullpen makeover for the Cubs, who have added Phil Maton, Hoby Milner and Jacob Webb and re-signed Caleb Thielbar.

The 31-year-old Harvey was slowed by injuries last season with the Kansas City Royals. He pitched in 12 games and was 1-0 with 11 strikeouts in 10 2/3 shutout innings.

The 22nd overall pick in the 2013 draft by Baltimore, Harvey is 10-11 with a 3.11 ERA in 182 games with 201 career strikeouts in 185 innings with the Orioles, Washington Nationals and Kansas City.

Chicago is looking for a return trip to the postseason after it made the playoffs this year for the first time since 2020. Brad Keller and Drew Pomeranz — two key relievers for the Cubs — departed in free agency.

Antetokounmpo

returns to lineup

CHICAGO (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo returned Saturday night from the right calf strain that kept the two-time MVP from playing in the Milwaukee Bucks’ previous eight games.

The two-time MVP scored a game-high 29 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 112-103 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

He blocked the Bulls’ first field-goal try and ended the game with a dunk to cap his first action since Dec. 3.

The Bucks went 2-6 in the eight games Antetokounmpo missed because of the calf issue. So far this season, the Bucks are 10-8 with Antetokounmpo and 3-11 without him.

Antetokounmpo has averaged 28.9 points, 10.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists this season.

Patriots rout

Jets 42-10

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Drake Maye threw a career-high five touchdown passes as the New England Patriots dominated the New York Jets 42-10. The Patriots finished the regular season undefeated on the road as they captured the AFC East title with Buffalo’s loss to Philadelphia.

Maye completed 19 of 21 passes for 256 yards before being replaced in the third quarter. New England finished 8-0 away from home, marking the third time in franchise history with no regular-season road losses.

Seahawks take

sixth straight

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks defeated the Carolina Panthers 27-10 to close in on the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs. Zach Charbonnet ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns, and the Seahawks turned two third-quarter Carolina turnovers into TDs.

The Seahawks have won six straight. They can wrap up the NFC West title and the top seed if the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams both lose or tie.

The Panthers had a chance to win the NFC South, but now they’ll likely need to win at Tampa Bay next weekend to win their first division title since 2015 and snap a seven-year playoff drought.

Rivers goes

0-3 as starter

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Philip Rivers knows he may have made the last start of his improbable comeback. Rivers ended a five-year retirement to rejoin the quarterback-needy Indianapolis Colts at age 44. But he couldn’t stop the Colts’ losing streak.

Although he gave the Colts a chance to win two out of his three games, he went 0-3 as a starter. With one meaningless game left, the Colts may turn to Anthony Richardson or rookie Riley Leonard as the starter.

Rivers says even if he had known the outcome, he’d do it again. He says it was “an absolute blast” to play what he called “three more bonus games.”

Trevor Lawrence ran for two scores as Jacksonville closed in on the AFC South title with 23-17 win Sunday over Colts.

MSU women

defeat Rutgers

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Rashunda Jones scored four of her 14 points in the final 28 seconds and Kennedy Blair posted a double-double to help No. 24 Michigan State hold off Rutgers 70-64 on Sunday in the Spartans’ Big Ten Conference home opener.

Kaylah Ivey hit a 3-pointer to get Rutgers within a point, but Jones hit a short jumper and then added two free throws following a Scarlet Knights turnover to help the Spartans (12-1, 1-1) prevail in their first home game in five weeks after going 5-1 on a lengthy road trip.

Blair filled the stat sheet with 12 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals. Inés Sotelo scored 12 with five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Starting at $3.50/week.
