Silver Mountain comments invited

ONTONAGON –The Ottawa National Forest is seeking comments on the Silver Mountain Recreation Site Improvement Project.

Silver Mountain, in the Ontonagon Ranger District, is a popular site for hikers and rock climbers, offering spectacular views of the forest. The purpose of the project is to improve access to the top of Silver Mountain, complete standard maintenance on specified trails, remove vegetation to maintain existing vistas, and maintain and identify new routes for rock climbing while improving safety.

The project recognizes the unique characteristics of the area and the substantial use by hikers. One of the goals is to provide safer access to the summit, while improving the user’s recreational experience and safety. The proposed project will change access to the summit by improving an established hiking trail and removing stairs. While access may be longer, it will not be as steep and will provide for additional views.

If you would like to provide comments, direct them to the Ontonagon District Ranger; 1209 Rockland Road; Ontonagon, Michigan. Additional information including copies of the proposal, comment forms, and maps are available at local Forest Service offices or online at https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=52814.
