Ice anglers catching northern, panfish
— Anglers report catching northern pike on tip-ups, along with a variety of panfish, as winter zig-zags from one weather pattern to another.
“Most fishing has been pretty good,” said John Grier at Whispering Pines Outpost on M-95, noting plenty of perch action at Lake Antoine. Crappies have also been biting, he said.
In February, Grier’s monthly fishing contest shifts to walleye. A 35 7/8-inch northern is the mark to beat for January.
The warm weather last weekend melted snow and increased current in flowages and rivers, said Aaron McCullogh, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wildlife technician at Wausaukee.
Wisconsin anglers have reported some nice catches of perch and bluegill, mostly along the Michigan border, said Doug Whisler of Whisler Outdoors in Florence, Wis.
There is pretty good ice on most of the Bay of Green Bay ranging from 12-18 inches, the Wisconsin DNR said. Anglers pursuing whitefish have been doing pretty well but yellow perch fishing has been spotty.
There was no updated fishing report from the Michigan DNR this week.
Wednesday will bring the second full moon of January — a “blue moon.” This full moon will be closest to the earth in its orbit, making it a “super moon.” There will also be a lunar eclipse in the early morning hours Wednesday. The eclipse makes the moon appear orange-red in color, hence the nickname the “blood moon.”
On Saturday, Feb. 3, the The Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Club will host Tip-Up Town at Sawyer Lake and Lake Edey, four miles north of Channing.
The fishing contest runs from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and features $2,000 in tagged fish in Lake Edey.
Registration is available on the ice. The clubhouse opens at 11 a.m.
