Summer hours set for center in Ottawa forest

IRONWOOD — Beginning May 25, the Ottawa National Forest Visitor Center in Watersmeet will resume summer hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central time daily.

The center has information about the local area and recreation opportunities, such as camping, hiking, canoeing, maps and more.

The Ottawa Visitor Center also once again will host its Thursday Evening Summer Program series from late May through August. It will open with “Keeping Track of Otters,” by Stacey Cotey of Michigan Technological University, at 7 p.m. May 30.

Also in the visitor center is the Bear’s Den gift shop. Operated jointly by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service and the Ottawa Interpretive Association, the shop offers many environmental books, unique gifts and other nature-related items. Proceeds from sales, after expenses, go back to the Ottawa National Forest as grants for interpretive projects.

For more information, contact the visitor center at 906-358-4724, or go online to www.fs.usda.gov/ottawa to learn more about the national forest.
