Deer Lake campground closed for hazardous tree removal
CRYSTAL FALLS — The Deer Lake State Forest Campground located in Iron County will temporarily close beginning today for removal of trees that present a hazard to campers and other visitors.
The campground was included in a larger timber sale area south of Deer Lake. The timber is being cut for prescribed forest management, mainly aspen and spruce/fir regeneration.
During a recent forest inventory, Michigan Department of Natural Resources foresters found dead spruce and fir trees, along with dying birch, in the campground.
Foresters determined these circumstances presented a good opportunity to remove the hazardous trees at the campground and to salvage what value remained in the timber.
The campground will reopen June 26.
