Program to explore origin of Pine River waterfalls

FLORENCE, Wis. — John Roberts, well known “Ambassador of the Wild Rivers,” will talk about the Pine River on Wednesday at the Wild Rivers Resource Center in Florence.

Beginning at 7 p.m. in the lower meeting room, he will give a 30-minute presentation on the underlying story of LaSalle and Breakwater Falls titled “Early-Earth Continental Collision in Florence County.”

Through LaSalle Falls, LaSalle Gorge, Breakwater Falls and Breakwater Gorge, Florence County’s Pine River drops 146 feet in just 2.4 miles of river length — one of the most spectacular river features in the Midwest.

The rock beneath this section of river contains a history of continental collisions, a massive mountain range, erupting volcanoes, molten rock and mile-thick ice. Understanding the story of the bedrock leads to a fuller appreciation of these two impressive Florence County waterfalls.
