Trout caught; UP walleye opener May 15

Outdoors report

IRON MOUNTAIN — High winds and cooler temperatures continue to slow the bite for Upper Peninsula anglers, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said.

Fly hatches have been slightly delayed with the cold weather as well.

The northern pike and walleye season opens Saturday, May 15, for the U.P.’s Great Lakes and inland waters.

Some trout anglers have been landing both browns and brookies, said Fay Whisler at Whisler Outdoors in Florence, Wis. “Some nice-sized browns,” she said.

There also were reports of bluegills biting in very shallow water.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said angler effort was high in Oconto County for last weekend’s general fishing opener, despite strong winds. Walleyes between 16 and 20 inches were caught from Oconto Park II south to Pensaukee.

On the Menominee River, jigs with crawlers or minnows were producing good catches of walleyes around the Menekaunee Bridge in Marinette, Wis. Fishing off the Hattie St. Bridge was working best using stick baits. Fishing in low-light conditions was reportedly better than daytime fishing.

The Michigan DNR reported these U.P. conditions:

Ontonagon: Steelhead being caught in the lake means spring is here. Anglers caught coho, lake trout, steelhead, brown trout and the occasional Chinook.

Little Bay De Noc: Anglers were getting some perch near the First Reef off Kipling and to the north. A few smallmouth bass were caught near the mouth of the Ford River.

Manistique River: Was producing a fair number of steelhead.

Munising: Windy and cooler weather has meant fewer boats heading out. Water temperatures remain in the 30s. Those targeting coho had poor catch rates although a few nice splake were caught. Limits of lake trout were reported with the average fish being 4 to 5 pounds. Shore and pier anglers caught a couple steelhead or splake.

Grand Marais: Anglers continue to do well for whitefish with limit catches reported. Though most fish were 13 inches or so, a few bigger ones were also caught.

Luce County: Trout lakes were producing some very nice brook trout.

St. Marys River: Perch fishing slowed. Lake trout were caught off Detour.
