Limited local fishing success

Outdoors report

IRON MOUNTAIN — Local anglers were seeing limited success this past week, according to Fay Whisler at Whisler Outdoors in Florence, Wis.

Reports indicated there was not a lot of walleye action this week, Whisler said, with the best bite coming on crawlers in the early morning hours. Northern pike and bass action was fair, with sucker minnows bringing in some decent-sized northerns, while a variety of baits were drawing in bass.

Perch and crappie action was poor, but anglers were reporting some very nice bluegill catches, Whisler said.

A reminder that Michigan’s Liberty Hunt takes place today and Sunday on private or public lands open to firearm deer hunting. Individuals with qualifying disabilities may participate, in addition to youth 16 years of age and younger.

The fall deer hunt in Wisconsin will start Saturday, Sept. 17, with the opening of the archery and crossbow season, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources .

Hunters wanting to use both a vertical bow and a crossbow may do so by purchasing a $3 upgrade to make their license valid for both weapons. Conservation Patron license holders may also use both weapons.

All harvested deer must be registered electronically by 5 p.m. the day after the deer is recovered, using GameReg online, by phone or at a registration station.

More information regarding electronic registration is available on the DNR registration webpage.
