Bass, northern pike, walleye, panfish catches reported; Menominee tested at night

Outdoors report

IRON MOUNTAIN — Deer hunting will soon take center stage, but warmer weather has helped keep anglers on the water.

Bass and northern pike action has been good, while walleye action has picked up with mostly smaller catches reported, said Fay Whisler at Whisler Outdoors in Florence, Wis.

“Fishermen seeking panfish were having some luck fishing along the deeper weed edges,” Whisler added.

Red Arrow Park in Marinette, Wis., was popular for perch anglers this week. Most were out in boats fishing the deeper waters, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

“Decent catches were occurring with lots of sorting through smaller fish,” the DNR said. “Minnows were working best.”

Most activities on the southern Menominee River were happening at night and during low light periods. Warmer water and very little flow were common.

Recent surveys showed a good number of walleyes in the river towards the dam, and a few whitefish were also around, the Wisconsin DNR said.

The Michigan DNR, which will soon suspend its weekly fishing report until early next year, reported the following Upper Peninsula activity:

Little Bay de Noc: Walleye fishing was slow. Smallmouth anglers reported fair fishing, some of which were respectably sized.

Manistique: Anglers reported the absence of pink salmon in the river, although they did see some remaining Chinook salmon. There were a few reports of steelhead being caught.
