Nasty winds predicted for Wisconsin deer opener

IRON MOUNTAIN — Wisconsin’s nine-day gun deer season opens today with the forecast calling for wind gusts as high as 30 mph and a high temperature in the low 20s, pushing wind chill values to near zero.

There’s a chance of snow today while Sunday should be cold, clear and still windy, forecasters say. Milder weather is expected through the week, with highs in the mid-30s.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources offers an “online deer camp” at https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/GoHunting that includes public land maps, hunting hours, regulations and more.

Michigan’s 16-day firearm deer season opened Tuesday, the first featuring the DNR’s “real time” online harvest reporting system.

As of 5 p.m. Friday, Menominee County had the highest buck harvest in the Upper Peninsula for the season at 1,346, plus 430 antlerless deer.

The Dickinson County count was 478 bucks and 105 antlerless while Iron County was showing 524 bucks and 201 antlerless.

At Whisler Outdoors in Florence, Wis., Fay Whisler said hunters were relaying reports this week of “lots of big bucks” on trail cameras.

Ruffed grouse hunters were enjoying success in a season that will run through Jan. 8 in northern Wisconsin. The Michigan season is suspended until Dec. 1 and ends Jan. 1.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has suspended its weekly fishing report until ice fishing becomes established.
