Menominee, Delta show highest UP buck harvests

Outdoors report

IRON MOUNTAIN — Menominee County narrowly holds the top spot in Michigan for the most bucks taken during the 16-day firearm deer season that ended Wednesday.

As of 5:30 p.m. Friday, the Upper Peninsula county’s buck harvest was listed at 2,483 on the Department of Natural Resources’ online reporting system. Montcalm County in central Lower Michigan was second at 2,470.

The harvest figures are available at https://www.mdnr-elicense.com/HarvestReportSummary. Because it’s a new system, the DNR doesn’t have comparison data from prior years. Also, hunters are required to report a harvest within 72 hours, so the season’s totals were not yet complete.

Delta County showed the second-highest firearm buck harvest in the U.P. at 1,706, followed by Marquette County, 1,404; Iron, 1,027; and Dickinson, 971.

In Wisconsin, the DNR reported a buck harvest of 1,029 in Florence County during the nine-day gun deer season, which was 29% above the five-year average. With permits limited, only 298 antlerless deer were taken — 31% below the five-year average.

At Whisler Outdoors in Florence, Wis., Fay Whisler said hunters had reported seeing “a lot of does” during the gun season.

A statewide muzzleloader hunt is underway in Wisconsin and will run through Wednesday. The state’s antlerless-only hunt follows Thursday through Sunday, Dec. 11.

Michigan’s muzzleloading season opened Friday and closes Dec. 11.

All of the Upper Peninsula is closed to the state’s late antlerless firearm season, which starts on private lands Dec. 12.

A review of Michigan’s deer harvest numbers, as well as a wolf management plan update, will be on the agenda when the DNR’s Western Upper Peninsula Citizens’ Advisory Council meets in an online conference from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Eastern time Monday.

For more information on the council, go to https://www.michigan.gov/dnr/about/boards/up-citizens/upwest.

Lake Superior’s lake trout season opened Thursday. Anglers must purchase a Great Lakes trout and salmon stamp in addition to their fishing license.

Locally, some anglers were testing early-season ice, but officials urged everyone to be aware of changing or unique conditions.

Tri-County Snowmobile Club will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Waucedah Township Hall in Loretto.

A segment of Snowmobile Trail No. 5 between Trails 14 and 310 in Marquette County will be closed until the end of January due to active logging operations in the area, the Michigan DNR said.

The closure is located southwest of Big Bay. An alternate route is available via Snowmobile Trail No. 310 and 14. The reroute will add additional travel miles to snowmobiler trips.

For the latest information on trail and other closures, go to Michigan.gov/DNRClosures.

In Wisconsin, Blue Ox Trail Riders will meet at 6 p.m. Monday at the Resource Center in Florence.

Starting at $3.50/week.
