Trees for Tomorrow offers education programs
EAGLE RIVER, Wis. — Trees for Tomorrow Environmental Education Center is seeking high school classes in Wisconsin and surrounding states to attend its multi-school programs for high school students.
Trees for Tomorrow offers overnight, outdoor learning experiences for kindergarten through 12th-grade school groups throughout the Midwest. The center includes 40 acres of combined public U.S. Forest Service and private lands with facilities that include dormitories, a full-service dining hall and ample classrooms.
TFT’s multi-high school curriculum for the 2022-23 school year offers glimpses into the life of a wildlife biologist, with lessons from its wildlife theme-based unit. Students have the opportunity to practice field-based skills such as radio telemetry, transects and wildlife capture techniques. Using the skills and knowledge they learn over the course of their four-day stay, students assume the role of a wildlife biologist and present a research proposal as their culminating activity.
“It’s amazing to see how invested students are when presenting their ideas,” educator Jane Feely said. “They research funding options, read up on previous studies and ask each other very insightful questions on each other’s proposals.”
With TFT’s multi-school programs for high school students, multiple schools can attend a single four-day trip together. Typical school groups attending TFT must include at least 12 students; by combining classes, teachers are able to bring smaller groups. These groups will attend the same lessons and meals, leading to opportunities for new connections and challenging students to work outside of their comfort zone.
“Students are often split into small groups for our lessons,” educator Todd Starling said. “Sometimes if they’re quieter back at their school, they really open up in this new environment.”
