Northern pike action good

Outdoors report

IRON MOUNTAIN — Ice conditions vary after recent warm weather, but the forecast calls for lower temperatures by the middle of next week.

Anglers were reporting 8 inches to more than a foot of ice. There was also slush in some areas.

“Northern pike fishing has been good,” said Fay Whisler at Whisler Outdoors in Florence, Wis. “Some nice-sized catches have been reported.”

The walleye bite has been slow. Shiners and sucker minnows were the preferred bait in about 20 to 25 feet of water, Whisler said.

“Panfish action has been good,” she added, noting anglers have been landing a mixed bag from area lakes.

Tri-County Snowmobile Club resumed trail grooming Thursday night after a pause brought on by the warmup and rain.

In Wisconsin, Florence County trails were open but in poor condition, according to travelwisconsin.com. Conditions were better in parts of Vilas County to the west, where the snow base was 8 to 12 inches.

Starting at $3.50/week.
