IRON MOUNTAIN — Tip-Up Town of the U.P. takes place Saturday, Feb. 4, at Sawyer Lake north of Channing.

Registration for the 49th annual fishing contest begins at 7 a.m. Food will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Club.

Overnight lows could reach well below zero over the next week, although Saturday’s predicted high is 18 degrees.

Crappie action has been good, said Fay Whisler at Whisler Outdoors in Florence, Wis.

“Anglers have been limiting out with lots of catches between 9 and 13 inches,” she said. “Jigging with waxies, spikes and small minnows has been producing a good bite.”

Northern pike and walleye action remains steady, with most anglers using sucker minnows and shiners under tip-ups.

Travelwisconsin.com lists good snowmobile trail conditions in Florence and Forest counties and Blue Ox Trail Riders notes the freezing weather should be a plus. That group will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at the Resource Center in Florence.

Niagara Area Business Association is hosting its annual candlelight snowshoe and ski event at the Niagara Riverside Trails on Saturday, Feb. 4.

The event starts at 5:45 p.m. for skiers and 6:15 p.m. for snowshoers. It features more than 500 candlelit luminaries along a 1.5-mile loop in the woods. Participants will enjoy a bonfire, chili and hot dogs. Snowshoes or skis are not necessary–winter boots work well.
