Youth, adult anglers earn prizes at Tip-Up Town

CHANNING — Anglers from as far away as Pennsylvania attended the 49th annual Tip-Up Town of the U.P. fishing derby hosted by the Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Club.

Youth were awarded fishing gear prizes for first through fifth place in five different categories. Adults were awarded cash prizes for first through third place in the same five categories.

Club members operated the kitchen for meals for the more than 150 anglers in attendance throughout the day.

Top youth anglers were —

— Northern pike: Sammy Caruso, 31 inches; Miles Holsworth, 2nd and 4th; Jack Holsworth, 3rd; Jason Harwath, 5th.

— Bluegill: Jason Harwath, 9.5 inches; Ella Alessandroni, 2nd; Jordan Bray, 3rd and 4th; Bo Glasheen, 5th.

— Perch: Noah Miller, 10 inches; Jason Harwath, 2nd and 4th; Ella Alessandroni, 3rd.

— Crappie: Trevor Larson, 10.5 inches; Jason Harwath, 2nd; C.J. Morgan, 3rd; Cash Raikes, 4th; Quentin Deau, 5th.

No youth registered any walleye.

Top adult anglers were —

— Northern pike: Brent Sparks, 31.5 inches,; Carl Hodges, 2nd; Mitzi Metzler, 3rd.

— Bluegill: April Harwath, 9.5 inches; Mel Slenkiewicz, 2nd; Ryan Miller, 3rd.

— Perch: Fernando Calzola, 8.25 inches; Nick Harwath, 2nd and 3rd.

— Crappie: Shakur Bocek, 12.5 inches; April Harwath, 2nd; Tim VanKlompenberg, 3rd.

— Walleye: Andrew Hartwig, 23 inches.

The club thanked the many sponsors and volunteers who made the event possible.

The annual gun show at the clubhouse north of Channing continues today from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The annual drawing for a Polaris side-by-side will take place at noon.
