Free fishing this weekend in Michigan; Houghton County sled dog races nixed

Outdoors report

IRON MOUNTAIN — Anyone taking advantage of Michigan’s free fishing weekend should be sure to test ice thickness and take other precautions, the Department of Natural Resources said.

Residents and visitors can fish without a license today and Sunday but all other fishing regulations apply. If ice conditions are uncertain, fishing from the bank may be an option on some waters.

During free fishing weekend, the DNR also waives the regular Recreation Passport entry fee that grants vehicle access to state parks and DNR-managed boating access sites.

The DNR is continuing a program begun in 2021 to keep boating access sites plowed at more than two dozen Upper Peninsula ice-fishing sites, including Lake Louise in Dickinson County and five lakes in Iron County — Indian Lake, Swan Lake, Lake Mary, Lake Emily and Lake Ellen.

In Wisconsin, today’s One O One Florence County fishing derby was canceled, but other activities are taking place. Booyah will be served at $5 a bowl starting at 3 p.m. today at the One O One Bar & Grill on Keyes Lake Drive west of Florence. The event benefits the Florence County sheriff’s K-9 unit.

Jenni Hanson, a Michigan DNR conservation officer from Gogebic County, will be highlighted in an upcoming episode of “Wardens,” a television show on Outdoor Channel.

“Archery and Firearm Deer and the 200th OTG” will air starting Monday. For airtimes, check outdoorchannel.com/wardens.

CopperDog organizers in Houghton County announced major modifications to sled dog events scheduled for March 1-3. While the CopperPull and CopperDash will still occur, the CopperDog 150, CopperDog 80, CopperDog 30 and CopperDog 15 have been canceled.

The Wisconsin DNR said there were reports of anglers catching brown trout in the lower Menominee River on spinners.
