A new license requirement for inland fishing guides in Michigan took effect Friday. The license is required for anyone guiding on any water except the Great Lakes, Great Lakes connecting waters and bodies of water with a surface area of less than 5 acres.

“Our main focus during the early stages of this new program is to make sure that everyone who wants to operate as an inland fishing guide is aware of the need for this license.” said Brandon Kieft, assistant chief of the DNR Law Enforcement Division.

The resident license fee is $150, and a nonresident license is $300. The license is valid for three years after it’s issued. Captains who possess a valid U.S. Coast Guard-issued captain’s license will receive a fee waiver.

A fee increase for nonresident archer and crossbow hunting licenses in Wisconsin is now in effect, bring the cost in alignment with the cost of a firearm license. The fee increase is $35, from $165 to $200 per customer. The fee for new buyers of nonresident archer licenses increased $17, from $82.75 to $99.75 per customer.

The additional revenue will support wildlife habitat and management activities, according to the Wisconsin DNR.

The final meeting of a six-part series focused on fisheries management in northeast Wisconsin will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the DNR Service Center in Green Bay, 2984 Shawano Ave. It will focus on ongoing habitat restoration projects in the Lower Green Bay and Fox River Area of Concern.

The meeting will be in person and via Zoom. Go to https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/calendar?field_meeting_details_value=Northeast%20Wisconsin%20Fisheries to register.

When boats could get out, they were finding some walleyes out from the mouth of the Oconto River and to the north of the pier, the Wisconsin DNR said. Hair jigs and rip-n-raps were being used.

Shore and boat fishing was available on the lower Menominee River with the Stephenson Island boat ramp open. A few brown trout and the occasional steelhead were being caught below the Hattie Street dam by shore anglers. Spawn was working best, the DNR said.
