Dickinson Trail Network volunteers enhance outdoor recreation in region
Progress 2024
IRON MOUNTAIN — Trailforks, a division of Outside Inc., helps online users discover trails and routes for mountain biking, hiking and other pursuits across the world.
In Dickinson County, the Trailforks app lists 96 biking trails totaling 156 miles.
The list includes 50 trails in the Iron Mountain area — 10 at Fumee Lake, 16 at Millie Hill and 17 at Pine Mountain; and 43 in the Norway area, including five at the Piers Gorge Natural Area and six at Strawberry Lake Park.
The ongoing development and maintenance of trails is largely due to the efforts of Dickinson Trail Network, a non-profit volunteer organization.
Ground was broken this spring on one of DTN’s newest projects — 6 miles of trails on Pewabic Hill in Iron Mountain. This city-owned property offers a high elevation point at its center — a plus for both biking enthusiasts and sightseers.
To help complete what DTN envisions as a world-class trail, a $183,200 grant was secured from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund. DTN provided a $64,000 match and about $15,000 will come from the city.
A bid was awarded in April to Iron Goat Trail Construction LLC of Quinnesec and the project should wrap up by November 2025. It will link to DTN’s Millie Hill Trailhead, a 5-mile system just west of Park Avenue.
On a 5-star system, trails in Dickinson County receive an average rating of 4.5 on Trailforks, including comments such as “Cool ride right by the river. I saw a bald eagle!”
In May, DTN hosted a grand opening for Pine Mountain Ski & Golf Resort mountain bike trails. Fundraising tickets were sold for a Fuel X bike valued at $5,000 and the winner donated the entire prize value back to DTN.
Beyond mountain bike trails, DTN promotes bike routes on established paved roads. Some routes have expanded shoulders for safer riding.
The annual Tour de Dickinson, based at Pine Mountain, is set for Aug. 3. A non-competitive, family-friendly ride will again be featured, but this year a competitive 100k race will also take place.
Registration information is at https://www.dtntrails.org/tourdedickinson.
During the winter, DTN switches to trail grooming, preparing snowshoe, fat-bike and ski trails across the county, including Marion Park in Norway and Fumee Lake.
DTN officers include Chad Susott, president; Bob Werner, vice president; Brent Fulks, treasurer; and John Trester, secretary. Board members include Steve Veihl, Merlin Calkins, Chad DeGroot, Mike Halley, Sanj Peterson, Kyle Lindstrom and Dennis Shinn.
