Antlerless permits finalized for Upper Peninsula; UP State Fair volunteers needed

Outdoors report

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources this week issued guidelines for antlerless deer permits in the Upper Peninsula.

In the western central part of the U.P., deer management unit 352 will require an antlerless deer hunting access permit and a universal antlerless deer license to hunt antlerless deer.

DMU 352 is made up of DMUs 027, 036, 152 and 252 and will have 500 access permits available. One antlerless deer hunting access permit for the DMU you are hunting in — plus one universal antlerless deer license — are required for each deer harvested.

The access permit application period is open through Aug. 15.

If you hunt in DMUs 022, 122, 055, 155, 255 and 121 in the southern U.P., all you will need is a universal antlerless deer license to hunt antlerless deer. Universal antlerless licenses are available for purchase over the counter without an application.

Closed to antlerless hunting in 2024 are DMUs 127, 066, 031, 131, 042, 007 and 048 in the northern part of the U.P. and DMU 351 in the east central U.P., including DMUs 021, 349, 249, 149, 017 and 117.

An update on the deer regulations approved by the Natural Resources Commission will be provided when the DNR’s Western U.P. Citizens’ Advisory Council meets Thursday in Escanaba. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. Eastern time in the Delta County Chamber of Commerce’s multi-purpose room, 1001 N. Lincoln Road.

Anglers fishing near Chambers Island off the Door Peninsula were catching lots of smaller salmon along with the occasional catch better than 15 pounds, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said. A few brown trout were caught closer to Marinette, Wis.

The Michigan DNR had no fishing report this week but will resume next week.

The DNR needs volunteers to mentor youth in outdoor recreation activities during the Aug. 12-18 U.P. State Fair in Escanaba. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Jo Ann Alexander at 906-786-2351, Ext. 0, or alexanderj7@michigan.gov; or Kristi Dahlstrom at 906-226-1331 or dahlstromk@michigan.gov.

Volunteers will have opportunities to help kids catch and release bluegill fish in the U.P.-shaped pond, shoot pellet guns or bow and arrow, staff the fire tower or greet visitors.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and pass a background check. Training is provided for all activities and volunteers also get a meal and commemorative T-shirt.
