ESCANABA — The Upper Peninsula State Fairgrounds will come alive next week as trappers, outdoor enthusiasts, and families gather the annual U.P. Trappers Convention that continues to prove its value year after year.

The convention serves as a vital hub to reignite interest in trapping, welcome new members, and educate both trappers and the public about its important role in wildlife management. Convention hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time Friday and Saturday, July 10-11.

Among the demonstrations, Jeremy Laakso will show everyone how to harvest Upper Peninsula mink in large numbers by “Trapping Mink the Laakso Way” – a system of speed and efficiency developed over many years,

Laakso’s passion for trapping began at age 5, learning alongside his father, the late Al Laakso. By age 8 Jeremy was independently setting traps for mink and muskrat, marking the start of a lifelong dedication. He fondly recalls beaver stretched in the basement and the excitement of checking local creeks and ponds.

Oct. 25 –opening day–became a treasured tradition for nearly 38 years, only interrupted in 2025 when his father’s health declined. Even then, Jeremy continued sharing each day’s catch with him. This past February, Alan Joe Laakso passed away after battling aggressive cancer, leaving behind a lasting legacy of mentorship and tradition.

Jeremy has trapped a wide range of species but holds a special passion for mink, inspired by his father. Known for innovation, he has refined his trapping methods and remains active in leadership, serving as District 5 president for 10 years and currently as treasurer and president of the U.P. Trappers Association. A strong advocate for community, he supports numerous organizations and emphasizes the responsibility of trappers to stay engaged and keep learning.

Families are encouraged to attend – with fun, engaging activities designed especially for kids.
