Student athletes were saluted at Florence High School's annual awards night program, with the top honors going to Mason Koski and Kelsi Chrisman. Koski was named the David Wenzel Memorial Male Athlete of the Year, while Chrisman was named the Ginny Ehrenreich Memorial Female Athlete of the Year. Hillman defeated Norway 5-2 on Tuesday in an MHSAA Division 4 softball state quarterfinal in Cedarville to advance to this weekend's state tournament in East Lansing. Hillman (33-9) will meet Mendon (30-3) in a state seminal Friday at Michigan State University's Secchia Stadium. Friday's other semifinal will have Brown City (25-11) facing Fowler (27-8). The Knights finish their season at 27-14, having earned the program's first regional championship Saturday with an 11-0 win over Superior Central (14-7).
Niagara High School athletes earned softball and baseball recognition in awards announced by the M&O Conference. Niagara junior Grace Payette was named a first team All-Conference infielder in softball. Sophomore Remington Buchanan was selected first team All-Conference in baseball. Niagara softball placed fourth in the conference. The baseball squad finished second with an 8-4 record. Coleman senior Gavin Pusick was Player of the Year in baseball.
