Farm to Family Program to begin in Dickinson and Iron counties

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Dickinson-Iron Community Services Agency announced that it will be participating in the state of Michigan’s “Farm to Family” program.

The program provides for the distribution of food boxes to anyone 60 years old or older. Each box contains fresh fruits and vegetables, along with some dairy, which has all been grown or produced on Michigan farms.

There are no income eligibility requirements; the program operates on a first come, first served basis, and boxes of food will be distributed every other week in both Dickinson and Iron counties throughout the summer and fall.

Distributions will take place at the following locations: the Sagola Senior Center parking lot/drive-up, the Felch Community Center parking lot, the Iron River Senior Center parking lot/drive-up, and at 621 North Hooper St. in Kingsford across from Trico.

Distribution locations and times will be published regularly on the lifestyles page of The Daily News.

Upcoming food box pick-up schedule is as follows:

— Kingsford location, 621 North Hooper St.(across from Trico): Friday, June 12, 9 to 10:30 a.m.;

— Sagola Senior Center, Thursday, June 11, 10 to 10:30 a.m.;

— Felch Community Center, Thursday, June 11, 9 to 9:30 a.m.:

— Iron River Senior Center parking lot drive-up, Thursday, June 11, 11 a.m. to noon. If an individual is unable to get to the distribution sites, arrangements can be made to ensure home delivery of the boxes.

Quantities for delivery are limited so anyone needing this service should not hesitate to call any of the following numbers to make the necessary arrangements: 906-774-2256 ext. 235, ext. 230 or ext. 244.

The food boxes are filled with what is available or in season at the time. Recipients do not have a choice of food items but can be assured of freshness and quality. When dairy items are available, they could include cheese, yogurt and other milk products as well as eggs on occasion. Each box weighs five pounds, and recipients can get up to four boxes for a total of twenty pounds. Dairy will not be available in the first few distributions.

Launched in 2016, Michigan’s Farm to Family is a statewide program that was initially focused primarily on farms. According to their website, food artisans were added to the program in early 2017. The goal of the program is to connect Michigan farmers and food artisans to the people they serve. Their mission is:

— To support the sustainability of small local farms and food artisans in the local food system;

— To support sustainable, environmentally friendly, and humane agricultural practices;

— To provide transparency in the food chain so it can be known where food is coming from and how it was raised; and

— To support individual and family health by providing real food, locally raised.

“DICSA is proud to be participating in this program,” said a representative.
