Phil Lynch Quartet plays Thursday

Phil Lynch Quartet

NORWAY — Four experienced Upper Peninsula educators/musicians will appear for the seventh installment of Music In The Park 2017.

The free summertime music series continues at 7 p.m. Thursday at the band shell in downtown Norway with the Phil Lynch Quartet.

Nearly 15 years ago, four public school educators with a love for jazz and classic American songs — plus a desire to contribute to the quality of life in Upper Michigan — joined together to form the Phil Lynch Quartet.

“Their unique musical endeavor is still going strong, bringing its brand of musical joy to happy listeners throughout the region,” event coordinator Carol Sundstrom said.

The quartet presents a fun and swinging mix of vocal standards such as Sinatra-era tunes; instrumental classics feature trumpet, guitar and piano; and original songs. Their repertoire ranges from Gershwin, Basie and Dizzy to the Beatles and Walt Disney — all in the key of jazz.

The newest addition to the quartet’s extensive playlist is Phil’s Upper Michigan Suite, an instrumental composition in four movements, each highlighting a different aspect of Upper Michigan’s unique locale and history.

The Norway Music Boosters will sell drinks, ice cream and other light concessions. Some seating is available at the band shell, but those taking in the performances can bring lawn chairs.

The rest of the Music in the Park season includes:

— Aug. 3: The Johnsons Bluegrass Band of Foster City;

— Aug. 10: Teen Talent Showcase, featuring local middle and high school musicians.

In case of inclement weather, concerts will be in the lower-level conference room in Norway City Hall.
