Daily Meditations: You are the light… Matt: 5:14
Years ago, Malcolm Muggeridge and a British TV crew were making a documentary on Mother Teresa. They wanted to film her and her sisters at work at the Home for the Dying in Calcutta. But there was a problem. There was no electricity in the building and therefore the cameramen said it would be impossible to get worthwhile pictures because the light was too dim. They decided to try anyway.
To their surprise, the footage was spectacular. The pictures seem to be bathed in a mysterious warm light.
Muggeridge, who later became a Christian as a result of this experience, was absolutely convinced the light came from the loving people in the home. He later wrote, “This love is luminous, like the halos artists have seen and made visible round the heads of saints. I find it not at all surprising that the luminosity should register on photographic film.”
This is what Jesus meant when he said, “You are the light of the world.”
When you stop to think about it, I think many of us have been in some special situations where someone seems to have a “special glow” on their face. Usually, it was at a time when a special care was given to some very needy people. There seemed to be a special love and joy present.
With all that is going on in the world that seems dark, wouldn’t it be wonderful if more of us could be the light that the Lord is calling us to be?
God bless.
