Daily Meditations: Prayer before a match

About 50 years ago, I was helping out with the COR Weekend retreats for high school seniors. At the end of each retreat, we gave them a prayer card with a kitchen match on it.

On the card, we had the following prayer:

“Lord, see this match… it scares me. It scares me because of all the power that it possesses, power to do good, power to do evil.

“It scares me because it reminds me of the power that I possess, power that is still not ignited.

“Lord, I am a lot like this match, I, too, do not light until I meet resistance… even then, I often turn out to be a dud!

“For I hold back, I refuse to give my light. Lord, I hope that this COR Weekend has helped me to realize that I must give my light to the world, that like a match, I do not exist for myself but to give of myself to others, to give my light to other, that my brightest moment is when I am giving!”

On the bottom of the card was the following quote from Pope John XXIII: “Every believer in the world must be a park of Light!”

God bless.
