To live by God’s word
Dr. Smiley Blanton tells the story of a patient who saw a Bible on his desk.
He was asked if he, being a psychiatrist, read the Bible. He told the patient, “I not only read it. I study it. It’s the greatest textbook on human behavior ever put together. If people would just absorb its message, a lot of us psychiatrists could close our offices and go fishing.”
To give an example, he said if patients paralyzed by guilt feelings took to heart the Parable of the Prodigal Son, they could be healed overnight. This beautiful story tells us that God’s loving forgiveness is infinitely greater than any mistakes we can make.
There is a saying that “if it is too good to be true, it isn’t.” The good news of the Bible isn’t too good to be true! So, we have to let God be God; we can’t earn His love and forgiveness.
Psalm 119 tells us “Your word is a lamp to guide me and a light for my path.” If we followed that light, there would be a lot less people going to the psychiatrists! God bless.
