KINGSFORD — Remembering Veterans Day, the Golden K seniors kicked off their weekly meeting with a singing tribute to the military. The Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard were remembered.

Six veterans present were honored for their service: Ben Determan, Paul Ward, Gary Proudfit, Gilbert Engel, Leon Gospodarek, and Charlie Yonts.

Military members reminisced about their experience during the Cuban Missle Crisis under the Kennedy Administration.

Happy Birthday wishes went to Lorraine Luba.

Guest speakers this week took time our from their busy holiday schedule to tell us about great work done at the Salvation Army of Dickinson County, Bread of life Assistance Center in Kingsford.

Next to Santa, Tara Blagec and Jennifer Witte are two of the busiest elves in the area. They began with praise for the support they have received from the community and from other local organizations.

This past year was not easy on anyone, and they worked tirelessly to distribute food, clothing, furniture and support.

The familiar bell ringing at the Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign is going on throughout our community.

If you’d like to get onto Santa’s “good” list, volunteer for a short bell ringing session. Those interested can call 906-239-6824. If you don’t feel called to ring, be sure to give a generous donation in the kettle, which benefits those in need over the holiday.

Donations can also be made through Walmart’s Registry for Good program. Donors can go to www.walmart.com/registry/registryforgood to make purchases.

The girls at the Salvation Army are also helping families understand and qualify for Energy Assistance Programs. Funds are available for those in need. Find out about this program and other opportunities to help by calling 906-779-5717.

Golden K sponsors a Christmas party for Kids on Dec. 13 at the First Presbyterian Church on Hamilton Avenue in Kingsford. Adults will enjoy their Santa time later that day at Recreation Lanes in Iron Mountain.

This is the time of year we remember how important it is to support our community and be present for our families. However, you chose to spread goodwill, the Golden K is proud to be there with you.
