Golden K members discuss Valentine’s party

KINGSFORD — On Groundhog Day, Feb. 2, Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow and declared an early spring. Although many winter enthusiasts are hoping he’s wrong, many others welcome the idea of spring.

Bill Roberts called the Monday meeting to order. Members thumbed through their songbooks as Alyce Derwinski played the piano. The songs for the day were “Oh What a Beautiful Morning,” “Put Your Arms Around Me,” “Pretty Baby” and “Shine On, Harvest Moon.”

There were no birthdays or anniversaries this week. The welcome song was sung for guest Mickey Khoury.

Members reported on those who are having medical issues and thanked members for continued prayers.

The Pot of Gold lucky winner was Dorleen Uhazie. Gary Proudfit read the Happy Dollars. Gospodareks were happy to report that they sold their house. Bill Roberts announced that Golden K has three new board members: Dan Pedo, Candy Buchcuski and Pat Polzin.

Thought for the day was a quote by Adlai Stevenson: “A hypocrite is the kind of politician who would cut down a redwood tree, then mount the stump and make a speech for conservation.”

There were no speakers assigned to the day’s meeting. The open meeting gave members a chance to discuss next week’s Valentine’s party and program ideas.

The Valentine’s party for special needs children is scheduled for Monday. Members will assemble treat bags for each child, serve refreshments, set up a craft table and an area to display Valentine’s.

Brett Calcari has agreed to emcee and entertainment will be provided by Ray and Mindy Pilon. Members were asked to arrive by 8:30 a.m. for set-up.

Members brainstormed on future programs and many excellent suggestions were presented. Bill Roberts will put together a calendar.

Golden K provided bingo at Optalis Health on Thursday and Freeman’s Nursing Home on Friday.

Golden K will have its next regularly scheduled meeting at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford. All are welcome to attend.
