Crystal Falls library to host Summer Scares book clubs

CRYSTAL FALLS — Do you like to read horror? Are you interested in reading petrifyingly scary selections and then talking about them with like-minded horror lovers like yourself? Then the Summer Scares Book Clubs at the Crystal Falls Community District Library will be ideal for you.

There will be three book clubs sorted by ages: adult, young adult and middle readers. Each club will meet once during each of the summer months in June, July and August to discuss that month’s chosen book. During the meeting, they will talk to the author via Zoom and share thoughts and observations about the book.

Adult selections include:

“Reprieve” by James Han Mattson, William Morrow, 2021 (406 pages) — The Quigley House is a full-contact haunted escape room made famous by its booby-traps and ghoulish actors. If a group of contestants can make it through without shouting the safe word, “reprieve,” they’ll win a substantial cash prize.

“The Luminous Dead” by Caitlin Starling, Harper Voyager, 2019 (432 pages) — Gyre Price must overcome more than the dangerous terrain of a place surrounded by darkness and something which calls the underground home if she’s to make it out alive — she must confront the ghosts in her head.

“Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke and Other Misfortunes” by Eric LaRocca, Titan Books, 2022 (288 pages) — Three dark and disturbing stories: Two lonely women find themselves in a macabre ballet, a grieving couple on a remote island receive an unexpected guest, and two neighbors enter into a dangerous game.

As things outside get worse, trouble starts seeping into the resort. Jay and his crew must learn how far they’ll go to save themselves.

“Find Him Where You Left Him Dead” by Kristen Simmons, Tor Teen, 2022 (272 pages) — Four years ago, five kids started a game. Not all of them survived. Now, at the end of their senior year, the survivors have reunited for one strange, terrible reason: They’ve been summoned by the ghost of the friend they left for dead.

“Eerie Tales From the School of Screams” by Graham Annable, First Second, 2022 (368 pages) — School is tough. School is scary. School is eerie. No one knows this better than Davis and Emily. But school gets eerier when their teacher asks the students to present the class with the spookiest, most chilling stories they can think of.

“Ravenous Things” by Derrick Chow, Disney Hyperion, 2022 (336 pages) — After his dad’s death, Reggie Wong has a quick temper that gets him into trouble at school, while at home his mom struggles to get out of bed.
