IRON MOUNTAIN — The Golden K seniors woke up to a cloudy and chilly Monday morning. It seemed like a good idea to just roll over and enjoy another hour in a cozy, warm bed. However, today was special.

It was the picnic event for the youth with special needs. Duty called and time was of the essence as we prepared for the kids.

There was a great turnout of members and volunteers for setup. Games and preparing lunch was easily taken care of at the Iron Mountain City Park.

As the wonderful kids began to arrive, the sun made its appearance and things fell into place.

Buses arrived and some happy young people came bringing enthusiasm, laughter, and squeals of fun. Finding their way to the games and the playground was no problem.

Inside the pavilion, Cassandra McMahon was doing some face painting. Pastor Jim Janofski was playing a grand assortment of instruments and singing. Liberty the Clown made her appearance and rumor has it that it was her birthday.

Kathy Arnold, director of RSVP, and her assistant, Kendra Trulock, rolled up their sleeves and pitched in to help.

Golden K seniors were busy managing the games outside and food inside.

Ice cream topped off the festivities.

Nothing brightens a day more than children of all ages having fun. A great group of supporting hands made it possible. Golden K members, their spouses, relatives, and friends joined in. Pastor Janofski drives in from the Ishpeming area and brings a joyful beat on a dozen instruments.

Warm sunshine, happy children, music and fun made it a perfect day. Golden K thanks the teachers, aides, and drivers who were able to come.

Golden K meets at 10 a.m. Mondays at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford. Along with coffee and donuts, there is usually a short program highlighting community events and organizations.

Don’t be shy — stop by and see what it’s all about.
