CRU:CA to have book discussions
KINGSFORD — The Christians for Racial Understanding: Community for All group will host two discussions on the 2019 best-selling book, “The Color of Compromise: The Truth about the American Church’s Complicity in Racism,” by Christian historian and racial justice advocate Dr. Jemar Tisby.
The discussions will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. this Tuesday and Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford and from 7 to 8 p.m. this Wednesday and Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
For both options they will discuss the first part of the book at the first session and finish at the second.
The discussion will center on how Christian churches and their members have influenced the history and development of America and their track record with regard to race relations and racial justice, particularly as it concerns African-Americans.
“This book gives a historical overview, from colonial days to the present, in a very compelling way, with lots of concrete stories. Tisby presents some difficult truths — along with some encouraging ones — that may be hard for Christians, or any Americans, to face. But I believe that facing them will help the church, and the country, move on to a better future,” said Ed Laarman, a local retired pastor said coordinator of the group.
