Carmelite Monastery to have its Fall Festival this weekend

BREITUNG TOWNSHIP -- White tents will appear on the grounds of the Carmelite Monastery this weekend signaling the 75th-annual Fall Festival fundraiser for the Sisters of the Monastery of the Holy Cross.

The event runs from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the monastery at the intersection of U.S. 2 and M-95.

Since their founding in 1951, the sisters have offered their lives in prayer and sacrifice for the salvation of souls and the needs of the Catholic Church, its priests and people. The sisters rely on alms, baking altar bread and sales from their small gift shop.

The Carmelite Fall Festival is the only fundraiser in support of the Carmelite Sisters.

A "tea table" will provide sandwiches, bars, cookies, coffee and lemonade. Other tables will offer craft items, theme raffle baskets, fall favorite baked goods and the sisters' famous bread. Raffle tickets are available at Catholic churches throughout the Upper Peninsula. Prizes include: 7/8-carat diamond earrings, $500 gift cards for Kwik Trip, $150 for Borderland Specialty Meats, a 43-inch Vizio Smart TV, handcrafted epoxy and wood charcuterie board with matching coasters, baseball pitching set with a Rawlings jersey and a baseball and mitt signed by former Detroit Tigers relief pitcher John Hiller.

The fall festival is open to the public and all are welcome.
