Newsom vows

fight in court

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom says the Trump administration is sending 300 California National Guard members to Oregon. That comes after a judge temporarily blocked the administration from deploying the Oregon National Guard to Portland.

Newsom pledged Sunday to fight the move in court. The Democrat said California personnel were on their way Sunday and called the deployment “a breathtaking abuse of the law and power.”

There was no immediate official announcement from Washington that the California guard was being sent to Oregon, as was the case when Illinois’ governor made a similar announcement Saturday about troops in his state being activated.

No progress in

ending shutdown

WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington lawmakers remain at a standstill over reopening the government, showing few signs of progress.

Both parties believe public opinion supports their stance, with Democrats pushing for health insurance subsidies and President Donald Trump aiming to maintain current spending levels. The shutdown adds to economic uncertainty, with hiring slowing and inflation high.

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries on Sunday criticized Republicans for not negotiating. The Trump administration sees the shutdown as a chance to cut federal jobs. Talks remain unproductive, with a Senate vote failing to advance a Republican bill.

Russian attack

kills 5 in Ukraine

(AP) At least five people were killed after Russia launched drones, missiles and guided aerial bombs at Ukraine overnight in a major attack that officials there said targeted civilian infrastructure. Moscow sent over 50 ballistic missiles and about 500 drones into nine regions across Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday morning.

Four people died and at least six more were injured in a combined drone and missile strike on Lviv, a historic western city often seen as a refuge from fighting. A Ukrainian regional official said a woman was killed and at least nine others were injured in a Russian aerial assault that destroyed residential buildings in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia.

Israel and Hamas

prepare for talks

CAIRO (AP) — Israel and Hamas are preparing for indirect negotiations in Egypt on Monday as hopes are rising for a possible ceasefire in Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said a hostage release could be announced this week.

Tuesday marks two years since the Hamas attack that sparked the war. President Donald Trump has pressured both Israel and Hamas to end the fighting. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the situation is closer than ever to a ceasefire.

An Egyptian official says the Hamas delegation has arrived. Israel’s delegation travels Monday. Meanwhile, strikes continue in Gaza despite Trump telling Israel to stop the bombing.

Swift’s ‘Show Girl’

debuts at No. 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) — This weekend’s box office belonged to two undeniable draws: Taylor Swift and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

It might have looked like a heavyweight matchup, but Swift’s devoted fanbase once again proved unstoppable with her film “The Official Release Party of a Show Girl,” which debuted at No. 1 with $33 million in North America, according to Sunday estimates from Comscore. The AMC Theatres release — announced only two weeks ago with minimal promotion — served as a companion piece to Swift’s 12th studio album, packaging music videos, behind-the-scenes footage and profanity-free lyric visuals into an 89-minute experience.

The film played at all 540 AMC theaters in the U.S. for three days, ending after Sunday. AMC aired the show in Mexico, Canada and across Europe.

Meanwhile, Johnson saw a more modest showing. His A24 drama “The Smashing Machine,” co-starring Emily Blunt, opened in third place with a mere $6 million, trailing Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” which earned $11.1 million and has now accumulated $107 million globally.

Starting at $3.50/week.
