More retirement apartments planned for Kingsford
KINGSFORD — A proposed development in Kingsford may bring an additional 26 to 28 retirement apartments to the Evergreen Heights area, with the developer purchasing about 8 acres of city property at $10,000 per acre.
The city council agreed Monday to continue talks with Michael Moroni of Moroni Building Inc. of Kingsford on a plan for about eight apartment buildings on property west of Westwood Avenue, north of Evergreen Heights and south of Freeman Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Moroni hopes to begin construction in the spring, City Manager Tony Edlebeck said.
Private roads in Moroni’s existing Evergreen complex may be extended to provide access. The city, however, wants to retain a right-of-way for a public street if one is desired in the future.
A zoning change from business purposes to multi-residential would be needed for part of the property. Moroni would pay to install water and sewer connections and maintain setbacks for the possible street, Edlebeck said.
The project area includes property owned by Moroni north of Evergreen Heights Assisted Living, along with a city parcel directly north of that. The street right-of-way, first drafted in 2005, runs between the two properties.
Council member Dennis Baldinelli suggested the city planning commission be approached about the zoning change as soon as a purchase agreement is in place, possibly in January.
In other action Monday, the city council:
— Had its annual organizational meeting and unanimously chose Joe Groeneveld as mayor for a second one-year term. Baldinelli again will serve as mayor pro-tem.
— Heard Edlebeck report 33 deer have been harvested in the city’s managed archery hunt, which continues through Jan. 1.
— Will seek an appraisal of vacant lots at 100 and 104 Doraland St. that the owner wants to turn over to the city as part of a possible purchase agreement for a city-owned lot at 370 Evergreen Court. The owner is to pay the cost of the appraisal.
— Adopted a resolution that allows retiring public works employee Richard Messer to purchase 25 months of military service credit towards his retirement benefits.
— Noted that City Hall and public works will be closed Friday, Dec. 23, and Monday, Dec. 26, for the Christmas holiday and again on Friday, Dec. 30, and Monday, Jan. 2, for the New Year’s holiday.
