NORWAY — To help teach students the dangers of drinking and/or texting and driving, Norway-Vulcan Area Schools on Wednesday staged an “Every 15 Minutes Program” for the fourth year.

The program challenges students to think about drinking, texting while driving, personal safety and the responsibility of making mature decisions when lives are involved.

The full-day event began with the “Grim Reaper” calling students out of class ever 15 minutes, after which an obituary written by the “dead” student’s parents was read.

The students return to class as “living dead” with their faces painted in white, coroners tag and black “Every 15 Minutes” T-shirt.

A simulated traffic collision was performed on the school grounds involving rescue workers who treated injured student participants, the coroner handled fatalities on the scene, injured students were extricated by the jaws-of-life manned by fire-fighters and paramedics and police officers investigated, arrested, and booked the student “drunk driver.”

Student participants continued their experience by an actual trip to the morgue, the hospital emergency room, and to the police department jail for the purpose of being booked for “drunk driving.”

Beacon Ambulance, Norway Volunteer Fire, North Alert Ambulance, Brian Swanson Towing, Ortman Funeral Home and Norway City Police participated in the program.

Norway schools has hosted the event in 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2018.

Starting at $4.00/week.
