IRON MOUNTAIN — Travel in the region remained difficult this morning as Monday’s rain and thawing flipped to ice when temperatures plunged to single digits overnight.

The Dickinson County Road Commission had crews out through yesterday and the night treating area roadways, said Jim Harris, managing director.

While most highways were in “decent shape,” he said some primary and secondary roads remain ice-covered and slippery.

“We have a lot of ice-covered roads still in up north — including Felch, Foster City, West Branch area,” Harris said.

“Today we have all four graders out, working on scraping the ice off those roads.”

Travel conditions could be further compromised later today.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory from 5 p.m. today to 1 a.m. Wednesday for Dickinson and Iron counties. The area could receive 3 to 4 inches of snow, with locally higher amounts possible, according to the NWS office in Marquette.
