Snowy, wet weekend predicted

IRON MOUNTAIN — It won’t be a good weekend for travel.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. today, followed by a winter storm watch until 6 p.m. Sunday.

The forecast calls for 6 to 10 inches of snow through Sunday, along with sleet or freezing rain late Saturday night into early Sunday.

Winds from the storm may become strong enough to knock over trees and cause power outages across the Midwest.

Snowfall amounts might vary from as little as 3 inches to more than foot, depending on the storm’s path, said AccuWeather meteorologist Richard Schraeger. It is expected to bring all or mostly rain to Chicago and Detroit.

Light to moderate snow is expected locally during the daylight hours today, turning to heavy snow and mixed precipitation tonight, then all snow later Sunday morning. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph Sunday.

The highest snow totals are expected west of Iron River, according to the National Weather Service in Marquette.

High temperatures in the low 30s are expected both today and Sunday.
