IM man gets prison in shotgun incident

CHRISTOPHER ANDERSON

IRON MOUNTAIN — An Iron Mountain man will spend nearly five years in prison for firing a shotgun several times at Park Ridge Mobile Home Park in November.

Christopher Scott Anderson, 40, was sentenced Monday in Dickinson County Circuit Court and may serve as many as 20 years on the charges against him, which included assault with a dangerous weapon, a felony punishable by up to four years in prison; weapons, firearms, discharge in or at a building, a felony with up to 10 years in prison; weapons, felony firearm, a two-year felony; and operating while intoxicated, a 93-day misdemeanor.

As a three-time habitual offender, Anderson was eligible to receive double the maximum punishment.

Defense attorney Abbey Anderson said her client had a history of depression and was self-medicating with alcohol instead of prescription drugs. She asked a sentence be fashioned with an emphasis on treatment.

At his arraignment March 5, Anderson said he borrowed the shotgun from a friend for bird hunting but decided to use it to commit suicide after a night of drinking.

Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Alex Sieminski said while Anderson does have clear substance abuse and mental health issues, he showed a disregard not just for his own well-being and property, but that of others as well.

Anderson was arrested Nov. 21 after police received a report about 11:43 p.m. that a man had fired a shotgun several times in the mobile home park area the night before Thanksgiving before driving away.

According to the criminal complaint, he admitted to discharging the weapon in the living room of a mobile home with two other people present. He also was accused of entering a bedroom and threatening to kill a person there before firing toward that person.

No one was injured in the incident, which Anderson claimed he couldn’t fully remember.

Anderson had no comment for the court when sentenced.
