Sparks fly downtown

Theodore Izzo photo

Iron Mountain Fire Department responded to an electrical fire Sunday evening at the Downtown Plaza in Iron Mountain. Firefighters were called around 8:43 p.m. to 427 S Stephenson Ave., outside Spiro’s Downtown Restaurant. The fire was extinguished after We Energies cut the power to the building. The IMFD determined the fire began when service wires reaching from a nearby utility pole to the building arced, sending showers of sparks to a dumpster below (near the center of photo) and igniting its contents. Firefighters returned to the station at about 10:40 p.m.
