Spectacular fireworks display planned in IM

IRON MOUNTAIN — Sons of American Legion Squadron 50 is again organizing the annual community fireworks from Millie Hill on Iron Mountain’s east side.

The display will take place at dusk on the Fourth of July. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held Friday, July 5.

“This year’s show has been redesigned in its presentation and also to include a new variety of shells which will make it even more spectacular than last year’s,” said Michael Laydon, fireworks program organizer.

To put on such a program requires a sizable budget. Although the cities of Iron Mountain and Kingsford, as well as Breitung Township, do contribute monetarily and with manpower, or both, the event is not municipally sponsored.

A majority of its funding comes from individual citizens and businesses.

Again this year, Iron Mountain Fire Department will be part of the fundraising efforts as they will walking the Independence Day parade route with their “fill-the-boot,” campaign, in which donations are placed in a firefighter’s boot.

Econo Foods and Super One Foods will also be conducting their usual fundraising efforts.

“Please consider supporting this community event with a donation of whatever you feel is appropriate,” Laydon said.

This will help defray costs of the fireworks and costs incurred for the staffing and insuring of the event, he said.

“We would truly appreciate whatever amount you can give,” Laydon said.

Checks may be made payable to “SAL 2019 Fireworks Fund” and mailed to SAL 2019 Fireworks Fund, PO Box 1046, Iron Mountain, MI 49801.

“Thank you for your past and current support. Enjoy the show and please, be safe,” Laydon said.
