Vulcan Middle School graduates receive academic awards

NORWAY – Vulcan Middle School Class of 2023 eighth-grade students were honored for their accomplishments during their middle school years at a Recognition Day program June 6 in the Norway Fine Arts Center.

The class selected “A Knight in Hawaii — Take a Trip with the Eighth Grade” as the theme for this year’s program.

Skylar Davenport was mistress of ceremonies and Paige Sabotta led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Academic awards were presented by teacher Linda Michaud. Students who received academic awards were selected by eighth-grade teachers based on effort, accomplishment and contribution to class. Band and chorus departmental awards also were presented by Michaud in the absence of music teacher Kaitlyn Ware. This was followed by Student Council awards given by the advisor, Gail Robert. Principal Rico Meneghini then awarded the President’s Academic Excellence Gold Awards and President’s Academic Achievement Silver Awards.

Eighth-grade chorus students Krystal Cayemberg, Abagale Deau, Corinne Menghini, Elisa Pineda and Sarah Tinkey performed a music selection, “I Was Here” arranged by Janet Day.

Poem selections were written and read by students, “Scared” by Tyler Paris and “Going, Going, Gone” by Sarah Tinkey. This was followed by an I-Movie memory, “A Knight in Hawaii — Take a Trip with the Eighth Grade,” created by Taylor Adams.

The Presidential Gold Award for Educational Excellence is based on grades earned — students must have a 3.5 or better grade-point average in four consecutive grading periods to receive this award. (Quarter 1, Quarter 2, Semester 1 and Quarter 3)

Norway-Vulcan Superintendent Lou Steigerwald gave the address to the Class of 2023, followed by Meneghini with closing remarks .

A dance took place that evening in celebration of their accomplishments.
