Two killed in separate Marinette County crashes

MARINETTE, Wis. — Separate motorcycle and all-terrain vehicle crashes claimed two lives in Marinette County on Saturday.

Scott Rupert, 64, of rural Marinette was killed when his motorcycle collided with a deer just before 7 p.m. on Perch Lake Road just west of Russ Mainik Road in the town of Wausaukee, Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve said in a news release.

William P. Doyen Jr., 49, of rural DePere, Wis., died in the ATV rollover crash Saturday morning in the town of Porterfield.

A witness said Rupert was eastbound on Perch Lake Road when he struck a deer in the roadway, lost control and entered the south ditch striking some trees.

Wausaukee Rescue and Bay Area Medical paramedics’ efforts to save Rupert were unsuccessful, Sauve said. Wausaukee Fire Department also assisted and the crash remains under investigation.

Sheriff’s dispatch was notified at 7:43 a.m. Saturday of a burned four-wheeler and a deceased male with the wreckage just east of Marinette County Road G and Highway 180 on a two-rut road to the Menominee River.

Doyen apparently was eastbound from Highway 180 on Porterfield’s Town Road No. 41 when the machine rolled and landed upright, Sauve said. The ATV burned, with the victim partially under the wreckage, he said.

An investigation continues by the sheriff’s office, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Marinette County medical examiner.

The traffic fatalities are the fourth and fifth in Marinette County in 2019, Sauve said.
