Suspect arrested in downtown IM break-ins

IRON MOUNTAIN — A 36-year-old Iron Mountain man was arrested Friday afternoon in connection with numerous break-ins at the Downtown Plaza in the 400 block of South Stephenson Avenue.

Iron Mountain police received a complaint at about 6 a.m. Friday and discovered that six businesses had been entered during the night, with mainly cash reported stolen, said Director of Police and Fire Services Ed Mattson.

After clearing and searching the building to make sure no one was still inside, police continued their investigation and at 1:15 p.m. found a suspect hiding in a wooded area near U.S. 2 and Michigan Avenue.

The man was taken into custody without incident. Numerous pieces of evidence related to the break-ins were recovered from the suspect as well as from his apartment when it was searched, Mattson said.

The suspect was lodged at the Dickinson County Correctional Center and charged with a bond violation stemming from an unrelated breaking and entering. Additional charges are expected after a review of the formal complaint by Dickinson County Prosecutor Lisa Richards, Mattson said.

Iron Mountain police were assisted during the building search by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department and Michigan State Police evidence technicians.
