Vandals take snowmobile, damage ski trail in City Park

IRON MOUNTAIN — Iron Mountain police reportedly looking for one or more individuals who stole and then wedged the Menominee Range Nordic Ski Club’s snowmobile against a tree after a “joy ride” through City Park in Iron Mountain earlier this week.

The snowmobile, a 2005 Skidoo Skandic, was abandoned by the tree in 30 inches of snow along the City Park ski trail, according to a Facebook post from John Nienstaedt of the Menominee Range Nordic Ski Club.

Damage to the trail initially looked extensive but proved superficial, Nienstaedt said. A combined total of about 10 1/2 hours of shoveling and grooming managed to get it back in shape, he said. The snowmobile had no significant damage.

In an interview Friday morning, Nienstaedt called the incident “a crime of vandalism that was done just to cause someone a lot of heartache.”

It is believed to have happened either Monday or Tuesday, Nienstaedt stated on Facebook, adding the public is asked to report if they used the trails to better narrow down the time when it happened.

The suspects may have entered the park on another snowmobile that was left near the park’s bocce courts, Nienstaedt stated.

Iron Mountain police said the VIN number from that snowmobile traced back to a machine reported as stolen in Kingsford, not to any suspect. They are continuing to investigate the incident.

Nienstaedt was out grooming the trail this morning and could not be reached for further details.

Anyone with information on the incident should call the Iron Mountain police at 906-774-1234 or Nienstaedt at 906-774-5606.
