Caspian woman sentenced to probation, 10 months in jail

CRYSTAL FALLS — A Caspian woman convicted of child abuse and preparation to burn a dwelling will spend 10 months in jail and serve four years on probation.

Corra Runion-Pomeroy, 26, was sentenced Monday in two separate files in Iron County Trial Court for fourth-degree child abuse, a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail; arson-preparation to burn a dwelling, a 10 year-felony; and assaulting, resisting or obstructing a police officer, a two-year felony.

Runion-Pomeroy pleaded no contest in both files Jan. 13. In exchange, Iron County Prosecuting Attorney Melissa Powell agreed to dismiss charges of attempted murder, punishable by up to life in prison; second-degree arson, a 20-year felony; malicious destruction of a building, a one-year misdemeanor; assault with a dangerous weapon, a four-year felony; and domestic violence, a 93-day misdemeanor.

Powell also agreed to reduce the charge of second-degree child abuse — a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison — and not to object to a county jail sentence.

According to one criminal complaint, Runion-Pomeroy was arrested Sept. 20 in Caspian after throwing lit matches on a concrete porch she had doused with lighter fluid. Two children were inside the residence.

A second complaint stated Runion-Pomeroy refused to cooperate with law enforcement as she was transported to a hospital and became aggressive and belligerent before transport to the county jail on March 5.
