Breitung to seek bids on two road projects

QUINNESEC — The Breitung Township Board on Monday requested the Dickinson County Road Commission take two local road projects out for bid this year.

The township and road commission plan to have Swanson Road crushed, shaped and paved from M-95 to Johnson Road. The project is estimated to cost $361,660.14, with the township’s obligation at about $225,289.70.

The road commission will contribute $136,370 and provide labor, equipment and fringes for preparatory work before pulverizing and paving, which will be contracted.

Also slated for construction this year is Frei Drive, which would be crushed, shaped and paved from Pine Mountain Road to the end of the drive. The entire project will be contracted out and is estimated at $98,962.60.

The road commission will contribute 25 percent of that project’s cost, with the township’s obligation at about $74,222.

In other business, the board:

— Authorized the Breitung Township Volunteer Fire Department purchase three multi-gas detectors, two regulators and one can of calibrating gas for a total of $2,772.

— Accepted Russ Garrett’s retirement from the Breitung Township Volunteer Fire Department, where he has served since 1995, Board Supervisor Denny Olson said.

— Hired Rachelle Russell as a volunteer firefighter, to be stationed at Fire Station 3 on M-95 in North Breitung.

— Approved Department of Public Works employees Jay Davis and Chris Wilcox attend the 2020 U.P. Water Works Institute training seminar in Harris April 14-15, at a cost of $125 per person.
