Marinette County has first COVID case; UP has first death
Marinette County in Wisconsin has confirmed its first case of coronavirus, bringing COVID-19 into another neighbor of Dickinson County.
The Upper Peninsula also recorded its first coronavirus death Thursday, an elderly man in Gogebic County.
Marinette County released few details on the case other than to state in a news release that the resident did have contact with a confirmed case in another county.
Marinette County Public Health officials said they now are working to identify all who may have come in close contact with this person.
“It is important that Marinette County residents do not panic but continue to follow recommendations to protect themselves, others and slow the spread of COVID-19,” said Molly Bonjean, Marinette County Public Health officer.
Public Health and Emergency Management also are working with local, state and federal partners on response plans.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Thursday indicated the state had 707 known COVID-19 cases, with 10 deaths.
The Upper Peninsula has four positive COVID-19 cases so far, one each in Marquette, Chippewa and Luce counties and the death in Gogebic County.
The victim in Gogebic County had other underlying health issues, the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department announced late Thursday.
The department continues to investigate the case, officials said.
