IM council resolution calls for equal justice
IRON MOUNTAIN — A resolution adopted by Iron Mountain City Council on Monday affirms the Black Lives Matter movement and recognizes “a moral imperative” to “stand in concert against racial injustice.”
Council member Kyle Blomquist, who drafted the resolution, said protests against racial injustice have been largely non-violent.
He objected to council member Ken Clawson’s suggested language condemning demonstrations of “anarchy and violence,” saying it might unfairly characterize Black Lives Matter. In the end, the council unanimously passed a resolution that includes a statement “condemning any destructive acts” that distract from the pursuit of equal justice.
The resolution opposes “systematic racism which affects people of color in this and ever other community in the United States.” It “denounces extra-judicial violence by any law enforcement agency against Americans.”
The council pledged to work with the city’s police department “to identify policies which prioritize de-escalation, minimize physical violence, and improve accountability while continuing to provide exemplary public safety to all its citizens.”
