Men plead guilty to vandalizing IM cemetery

HARLEY SHERK

IRON MOUNTAIN — Two Iron Mountain men accused of destroying cemetery headstones at Iron Mountain Cemetery Park pleaded guilty Monday in Dickinson County Circuit Court.

Harley Sherk, 25, and Darian Unrein, 19, admitted to malicious destruction of tombs and memorials, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

Sherk initially was charged as a three-time habitual offender and could have faced as many as 10 years in prison. In exchange for his guilty plea, the habitual offender notice was dismissed.

Sentencing is set for July 20.

According to the criminal complaints, a caretaker at the cemetery reported several gravestones had been vandalized on or about April 5 or 6.

DARIAN UNREIN

Iron Mountain Police Department investigators eventually identified Sherk and Unrein as suspects, the complaint stated.

They confessed to vandalizing a total of 34 gravestones or memorials and one marble vase. The total amount of damage was estimated at more than $5,000, according to the complaint.
