District attorney race on Florence ballot
But for a couple of races, the Wisconsin primary Tuesday will be short on drama in Florence and Marinette counties.
One contest that will be all but decided Tuesday is Florence County district attorney, as both local lawyer Gregory Seibold and 28-year incumbent Douglas Drexler are running as Republicans. With no Democrat filing for the office, the winner will have no opponent in the Nov. 3 general election.
A Navy veteran, Seibold has been practicing law for 29 years, the first 17 years with a law firm in Madison, Wis.
In a campaign press release, Seibold said he’s committed to backing local and state law enforcement agencies in protecting the citizens of Florence County and the surrounding areas.
Both candidates emphasized the importance of fighting illicit drugs in the county, with Drexler saying the acquisition of a drug dog for the sheriff’s department has helped in the successful prosecution of cases involving methamphetamine, heroin and opioids.
“It has always been my desire to keep Florence County safe and I believe with me as district attorney that Florence County is a safe and great place to live and visit,” he said.
All of the other county positions on the ballot Tuesday — clerk, treasurer and register of deeds in both counties and district attorney in Marinette County — are running as Republicans and will face no opposition in November.
Two of the state Legislative races in Marinette County do have primary contests.
The state Senate District 30 is an open seat after incumbent Democrat Dave Hansen of Green Bay chose not to run. In the Democratic primary are De Pere Ald. Jonathon Hansen, the senator’s nephew, and accountant Sandra Ewald of Green Bay. The winner will face attorney Eric Wimberger, a Republican from Green Bay.
Senate District 30 includes southern Marinette County and parts of Brown, Shawano and Oconto counties.
In state Assembly District 89, seven-term incumbent Rep. John Nygren of Marinette faces a primary challenge from Andi Rich, also of Marinette.
Nygren, 56, is an insurance agent who has represented the district since 2006 and is co-chairman of the Finance Committee since 2013. Rich, 37, is an independent adjuster and small business owner who has bachelor’s degrees in business administration and marketing from Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wis.
The winner will face Karl Jaeger, a Democrat who also is from Marinette, in the Nov. 3 election.
The 89th District includes the southern portion of Marinette County, the eastern towns of Oconto County, and the village of Suamico and the east side of the village of Howard in Brown County.
In state Assembly District 36, Republican state Rep. Jeffrey Mursau of Crivitz will not face a Democratic challenger in November for an eighth term.
